How to get the best acting headshots:

As a professional photographer, I understand the importance of acting headshots for actors and performers. These headshots are often the first impression that casting directors and agents have of an actor and can make or break their chances of getting a role.

Our studio here in St. Louis that specializes in all things headshots. I’m excited to help you get the best headshots possible to make your more competitive for your dream roles. Here are my tips for getting the best acting headshots:

  1. Think about your character types: Your wardrobe should reflect the types of roles you are interested in and the characters you want to play. Talk to your agent or do some research on what character types you might play and dress accordingly. Avoid busy patterns, and stick to your best colors and classic styles that flatter your body type.

  2. Get your hair and makeup done: I would highly recommend getting your hair and makeup done professionally before your headshot session. For acting headshots, you usually want to keep the makeup pretty natural which not everyone can do for themselves. A professional hair and makeup artist will help you look your best. If you are taking acting seriously, it is definitely worth the investment.

  3. Practice your expressions: Your headshot should reflect your personality and the types of roles you want to play, so practice different expressions in the mirror before your session. Think about the types of characters you want to play and what emotions they might be feeling.

  4. Bring different looks: Bring a variety of looks to your headshot session, such as casual and formal wear, different hairstyles, and different expressions. This will give you a variety of options to choose from when selecting the final headshot.

  5. Be ready to be silly: A lot of the best shots come from being willing to get out of your comfort zone. While I will coach you through a number of poses, it’s important for you to take ownership of your expressions and bring your energy to the pictures. Think of this session as good practice for your auditions!

  6. Be confident: Remember that your headshot is a representation of you, so be confident in front of the camera. Your photographer will guide you through the process and help you to feel at ease.

Great headshots are a crucial investment in your career as an actor. These tips will help any St. Louis actor have the most successful headshots session possible. Check out some of our character type portraits below:
